A Persuasive Essay

This essay was written for an english assignment. We were asked to write a essay on the topic:
Your school board is thinking of eliminating electives from your school to save money (something like that). I hope it's not to boring to read.



To Whom It May Concern at the School Board:

Try to imagine a town, where everything is the absolute minimum. Here they have no extra little things that make up a personality like personal houses and personal businesses. In fact, they only have four districts here: food, water, shelter, and waste removal. All the people that live here are assigned to work at one of the districts. They also receive everything they need to survive from the districts. Although this town can survive, it cannot live. People on the outside don’t want to come here, because they have better things where they come from. Likewise, all the people in the town who hear of better places want to get out. If the elective subjects are eliminated, the school will become quite like this town. Our school will become a school that nobody would choose to go to, a school that people don’t care for enough to stay at, and a school that has no personality.
Bring the image of the town back into your mind. Does this bleak and unwelcoming city interest you? I am not alone to say that I would not like to spend my time here. Our schools may become like this. Specialized electives bring in students that would like to learn about them. Taking away the electives from the schools will stop this growth. For example, If 100 students that are coming to our schools that are interested in band, learn that there is no band where they going, they will try to go to a school that has band. 100 students that could be bright kids that will raise test scores will not be coming to our schools. If you drop the electives, not only will people not want to go there, they will want to leave.
If you were a worker in the town above, would you like to work there? Would you like to leave? How about a school like this? Would you stay there? Who would want to stay? If you take away the electives, most of the students will want to go to other schools where they have elective classes. The more classes they take the more knowledge they will have, and knowledge is power. I personally think it would be worth it to travel to another school. At another school I can learn more therefore having a better chance at receive a better job. Electives also bring a little relief to a stressful school day. In being able to choose your classes, you might add something that you like and are good at. Having a better attitude helps you learn more. Not only do elective classes help students, they also add personality to their lives.
As a student I know that personality is a big thing. Finding out what you like, and expressing yourself is something that happens as a student. If you never find out what you like you might go into a profession that you don’t enjoy, causing you to quit after you have had enough. This leads to loads of problems such as unemployment, deflation, recessions and so forth. In that big scary world out there it is nice to do your own little thing now and then. Taking out the electives will cause people to be deprived of their personality. They will have to do the same things as others and not express themselves.
As you can see taking out the electives can cause some major damage to the student’s life.
Try to not take out the electives so that our schools become like the town. Keeping the electives will not only keep student here, it will also bring more in. The students will be able to express themselves in way they couldn’t before. You can certainly agree with me that keeping the electives is the better answer.
